Oelwein Police are investigating a criminal mischief complaint. Oelwein Police received a report of criminal mischief at 00:20 am on December 12, 2015 from the 200 block of 7th Avenue NE. This incident remains under investigation.
Oelwein Police Officers, this holiday season, will be lending a helping hand to those in need. Thanks to a donation, from an anonymous Oelwein Police Department Employee, officers will be providing persons in need with a $20 Fareway gift card. The intent is to provide a little gift to persons that could use some help purchasing food this holiday season. Officers will be giving away 100 of the $20 food gift cards.
Officers will provide the cards to persons that they know are in need and the Northeast Iowa Community Action Center has kindly agreed to provide referrals, to their clients, to make contact with the department for assistance.
“The employees of the Oelwein Police Department are proud to serve this community and are pleased to give back to the community by helping those that need a little boost this time of year” advised Chief Jeremy Logan. “Our staff sees so much negativity and tragedy throughout the year and it is wonderful that we have this opportunity to hopefully brighten the day of some of our residents.”
The food gift cards will only be provided directly by officers to those that the department knows has a need or by direct referral from the Northeast Iowa Community Action Center.
At 11:17 AM on December 10, 2015, Oelwein Police arrested David Alexander Ames, 25, of Hazelton. Ames was arrested on two Buchanan County Warrants for Conditional Release Violation, Failure to serve jail sentence.
On December 8, 2015 at 9:40 a.m., due to an incident earlier in December, Officers arrested Randall Lee Meike, age 43 of Oelwein, on a charge of Domestic Assault, a Simple Misdemeanor.
Oelwein Police investigated a motor vehicle accident in the 10-blk of 1st St SE at 12:45 pm. A Red 1994 Chevrolet C1500 Driven by Phoebe Ann Vargason collided with a Blue 2004 Chevrolet Aveo driven by Jan Teresa Vandewalker. Vandewalker was cited with Failure to Yield. The Oelwein Police was assisted by the Oelwein Fire Department

AT 1:30 am on December 6, 2015 Oelwein Police stopped a vehicle in the 700 block of Highway 150 S. The vehicle came back reported stolen out of Cedar Rapids. The driver was determined to be Anthony Robert Skriver, 18, of Delmar. Skriver was cited for Careless driving and Cedar Rapids Police Department will follow up on this case.
On December 3, 2015 at 2:10 p.m., Oelwein Officers received a report of illegal tattooing occurring in the 600 block of 2nd Avenue NE in Oelwein. Officers responded to a residence and cited William George Perry, age 48 of Oelwein on a charge of Tattooing Permit Required.
At 10:22 PM on November 18, 2015 Oelwein Police arrested Zachary Wade Hernandez, 21, of Evansdale. Hernandez was arrested on a charge of Assault- Simple Misdemeanor. This arrest was made following a disturbance in the 300 block of 1st St NE.
At 10:33 Pm on November 22, 2015 Oelwein Police Cited and Released Jodie Wakeford, 39, of Hazelton. Wakeford was cited on a charge of Driving while License Suspended. This citation was issued following a traffic stop in the 400 block of 13th AV NW
At 03:24 am on November 23, 2015 Oelwein Police arrested Austin Dean Nichols, 19, of Hazelton. Wakeford was arrested on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance-Serious Misdemeanor and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia-Simple Misdemeanor. Nichols’ arrest followed a traffic stop in the 300 block of second Ave NE.
On November 29, 2015 at 7:00 a.m., Oelwein Officers were called to the 500 block of 3rd St SW in Oelwein to check on a suspicious vehicle in the area. Officers did locate the vehicle and arrested Victor Raymond Childers, age 18, of Aurora on a charge of Possession of Controlled Substance, Marijuana, a Serious Misdemeanor.
On November 30, 2015, City crews enforced a court order to remove items that were previously declared a nuisance by the court. City departments removed, from 25 3rd Street N.W., three truck-loads of debris, garbage and junk from the front, sides and back yard of the property as well as drained dark and stagnant water from a large above-ground swimming pool.
On November 10, 2015, evidence was provided to the court that displayed that officers had attempted to gain compliance, from the property owner, for several months. The court declared the items listed on the property were a nuisance, as defined in the Oelwein City Code, and ordered the property owner to remediate the issues. The court assessed a fine of $5,000 towards the property owner. Of that fine, $4,000 would be suspended if the property owner removed the nuisances prior to November 27th. If the items were not removed, the court authorized the City of Oelwein to remove the items and assess the costs to the property owner.
On November 30th, it was determined that the nuisance had not been abated and the City of Oelwein took the appropriate steps to remove the nuisances.
On November 14, 2015 at 4:15 a.m., Oelwein Officers took a report of property stolen from a residence in the 100 block of 2nd St NW in Oelwein. After an investigation, the property was recovered and returned. On November 17, 2015 at 12:30 a.m., Oelwein Officers arrested Aaron Richard Siegel, age 21 of Oelwein on a charge of Joint Criminal Conduct-Abandonment of Cats and Dogs, a Simple Misdemeanor and Danielle Leora Lightfoot Lehman, age 27 of Oelwein on charges of Theft in the 3rd Degree, an Aggravated Misdemeanor and 7 counts of Abandonment of Cats and Dogs, all Simple Misdemeanors.
On November 14, 2015 at 6:00 p.m., Oelwein Officers responded to a report of shoplifting in the 10 block of 1st Avenue SE. Officers arrested Michale Tyre Charles Ashmond Jefferson, age 18 of Oelwein, for Theft 5th Degree, a Simple Misdemeanor.
