On 08/17/21 Oelwein officers executed a search warrant at 706 3rd Ave SW.  The warrant was part of an ongoing drug investigation.  Officers were assisted by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, both patrol and corrections officers and the Iowa State Patrol. 

All were charged with gathering where controlled substances are being used, and drug tax stamp violations.  Additional charges for some of the defendants are noted.

At 2251 dispatch received a call that an older white vehicle with Minnesota plates had driven through a couple of yards and the suspect vehicle was now at Casey’s in Oelwein. An Oelwein Officer arrived at Casey’s at 2253 and attempted to make contact with occupant of the vehicle. The vehicle took off and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit ended in a field in the 9000-blk of Neon Rd in Maynard. The occupant fled on foot and was subsequently apprehended in a corn field.

 Michael Lopez, 34, of Postville was charged with Eluding-D Felony, Possession of Marijuana 1^st Offense - Serious Misdemeanor, Driving while License Suspended - Simple Misdemeanor, Reckless Driving - Simple Misdemeanor, along with several traffic violations. Other charges may follow.

 Oelwein Police were assisted by the Fayette Co Sherriff's Office and the Iowa State Patrol.

At 8:08 p.m. on August 15th, 2021, Oelwein Police arrested Dakota Fratzke, 23, of Strawberry Point. Fratzke was arrested on charges of Possession of Controlled Substance - serious misdemeanor, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia - simple misdemeanor, Criminal Mischief - felony, Possession of Controlled Substance (marijuana) - simple misdemeanor - Theft 2nd Degree - felony, and Driving While License Suspended. This arrest was made following a traffic stop at 5th Ave NW and West Charles.

At 8:15 a.m. on August 13th, 2021, Oelwein Police arrested Carl Hernandez, 49, of Oelwein. Hernandez was arrested at the Oelwein Police Dept on a Fayette County warrant for an original charge of animal abuse. 

Oelwein Police are investigating a motorcycle theft complaint. Oelwein Police received a report of theft of a motorcycle at 11:22 a.m. on August 13th from the 500 block of West Charles. The vehicle is described as a 2006 black Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle. This vehicle was later recovered.

At 1:38 p.m. on August 13th, 2021, Oelwein Police arrested Terry Staton, 64, of Oelwein. Staton was arrested on a charge of Driving While License Revoked - Serious Misdemeanor. This arrest was made after a citizens report of suspicious activity in the area.

Oelwein Police investigated a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of 7th St SE and Rock Island Rd at 3:19 p.m. on August 13th, 2021. A Buick Enclave driven by Sandra Steil collided with a Dodge Grand Caravan driven by Ashton Beatty. Oelwein Police were assisted by Mercy Oelwein Ambulance and the Oelwein Fire Dept.

On August 12, 2021, at approximately 11:15 a.m., the Oelwein Police Department responded to a report of a suspicious package that was left near a building at Transco, 300 7th Ave NW. Upon investigation,  the package deemed to not be a threat to the safety of those nearby. 

Oelwein Police are investigating a theft complaint. Oelwein Police received a report of a theft at 4:56 p.m. on August 11th, 2021, in the 100 block of 7th Ave NW. This incident remains under investigation.

On August 10, 2021 at 3:05 a.m., Oelwein Officers responded to a domestic disturbance in the 900 block of North Frederick in Oelwein.  A report was initiated at this time.  At 11:05 p.m. on August 10, 2021 Officers arrested Randall Lee Meike, age 49 of Oelwein, on a charge of Domestic Abuse Assault-Causing Injury 1st Offense, a Serious Misdemeanor.

At 6:15 p.m. on August 9th, 2021, Oelwein Police arrested Anthony Steven Peter, 35, of Oelwein. Peter was arrested on a Fayette Co warrant for an Oelwein Police Department original charge of Sex Offender - Area / Activity Violation in the 300 block of East Charles.

At 7:26 p.m. on August 8th, 2021, Oelwein Police arrested Kody Letts, 30, of Winthrop. Letts was arrested on a charge of Driving While License Suspended and Interference with Official Acts - Simple Misdemeanor. This arrest was made following a traffic stop in the 10 block of North Frederick Ave.

At 11:51 p.m. on August 8th, 2021, Oelwein Police arrested Corey Conner, 44, of Oelwein. Conner was arrested on charges of Possession of Controlled Substance - a serious misdemeanor, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia - a simple misdemeanor, and Interference with Official Acts - a simple misdemeanor, after a report of a suspicious person in the 100 block of 1st Ave SE. Conner was also served a Fayette Co arrest warrant for Failure to Appear at a child support hearing.

On August 6th, 2021, at 7:53 a.m. Oelwein Police received a report of criminal mischief in the 300 block of 5th Ave SW. This incident remains under investigation.

The Oelwein Police Department has concluded an investigation that stemmed from a narcotics search warrant that was carried out on February 19, 2021 which resulted in the following arrest.

Evidence seized during the search warrant has been processed and additional charges have been filed on Dustin Christian Staley. Subsequent arrest warrants were issued for Staley and he was arrested on August 5, 2021. The following are the additional charges filed against Staley.

Staley was transported to the Fayette County Jail pending an initial appearance before the court. The Sumner Police Department assisted the Oelwein Police Department with the arrest.
