With the help of the community, the Oelwein Police Department’s 2014 winter coat drive was an incredible success. The coat drive started on November 1st, 2014, inviting the public to drop off new and slightly used winter coats, hats, gloves, scarfs or monetary donations. The original goal was to receive at least 100 coats. On December 18th, the police department announced they were no longer accepting donations, as they had received 304 coats, 15 pairs of boots, 30 hats, 25 gloves, 13 scarfs and 10 pairs of snow pants. Oelwein Captain Ron Voshell stated “We were shocked by the overwhelming success of this project and the generosity of our citizenry. We want to thank everyone who assisted in this effort.” The smaller winter apparel was turned over to Wings Park Elementary staff, Britani Magsamen and Carrie Peterson. The adult apparel was given to Full Circle Services (John Heinze, Vickie Wendel, Zachary Moffeit and Joshua Wieland). With the help of the Wings Park Elementary staff and Full Circle Services, the winter apparel will find new homes for our neighbors who need them.
