The Oelwein police and fire departments and the American Red Cross teamed up Wednesday, May 22nd for the “Battle of the Badges” Blood Drive Competition at the Oelwein Community Plaza. Each year the Oelwein Fire Department and the Oelwein Police Department “battle for blood”, or try to get the most people to donate blood to receive a point for their department. The winning department receives bragging rights and holds the trophy in their department for the year. The goal this year was to get a total of 27 pints of blood, and they almost doubled that with 52 pints of blood. Officer Paul commented “This year’s turnout was fantastic! It was the best turnout we’ve had in the last three years. I would like to thank the citizens of Oelwein and surrounding areas for coming out and supporting the police and fire departments as well as the American Red Cross. Please continue to donate to the Red Cross by giving blood or with monetary donations.” After the event was over, the police department took the trophy, beating the fire department 30 to 25.
