On May 28th, 2013 at 6:40 a.m., Oelwein Officers observed a male operating a vehicle without a seatbelt. Officers performed a traffic stop in the 100 block of South Frederick Avenue and the driver was discovered to have a barred driving status. Officers arrested Christopher Scott Phelps, age 30 of Denver, Iowa on a charge of Driving While License Barred, an Aggravated Misdemeanor.
On May 27, 2013 at 4:39 a.m., Oelwein Officers executed a routine traffic stop in the 200 block of 1st Ave NW in Oelwein. Officers arrested the driver Brier Michael Thein, age 18, of Waterloo on Driving while License Suspended and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia both Simple Misdemeanors.

On May 25, 2013 at 7:01 p.m., Oelwein Officers were called to a business in the 100 block South Frederick Ave for a reported shoplifter. Officers arrested Jessi Rae Smith, age 15, of Oelwein on a charge of Theft 5th Degree, a Simple Misdemeanor.
Oelwein Police investigated a motor vehicle accident in the 10 block of 1st Ave SE at 7:51 a.m. on May 25, 2013. A White 2007 Dodge Charger driven by Elizabeth Lynn Toms collided with a Tan 2001 Chrysler Sebring driven by Charles Albert Curl. Toms was cited with Careless Driving.

The Oelwein police and fire departments and the American Red Cross teamed up Wednesday, May 22nd for the “Battle of the Badges” Blood Drive Competition at the Oelwein Community Plaza. Each year the Oelwein Fire Department and the Oelwein Police Department “battle for blood”, or try to get the most people to donate blood to receive a point for their department. The winning department receives bragging rights and holds the trophy in their department for the year. The goal this year was to get a total of 27 pints of blood, and they almost doubled that with 52 pints of blood. Officer Paul commented “This year’s turnout was fantastic! It was the best turnout we’ve had in the last three years. I would like to thank the citizens of Oelwein and surrounding areas for coming out and supporting the police and fire departments as well as the American Red Cross. Please continue to donate to the Red Cross by giving blood or with monetary donations.” After the event was over, the police department took the trophy, beating the fire department 30 to 25.

On May 19, 2013 at 12:15 a.m. Oelwein Officers received a report of a suspicious person in the 10 block of 5th Avenue NE. Upon investigation, officers arrested Roger Allen Kline, age 48 of Oelwein, on a charge of Violation of a No Contact Order, a Simple Misdemeanor.
Oelwein Officers were responded to a report of a barking dog creating a disturbance in the 600 block of North Frederick Avenue on May 19, 2013 at 8:00 p.m. Officers cited Amber Charmaine Crique, age 23, of Oelwein for Allowing a Canine to Bark Causing a Disturbance of the Peace.
