Oelwein Police are investigating a theft complaint.  Oelwein Police received a report fo theft at 11:17 a.m., on October 8, 2016 from the 400 block of 7th ST SE.  This incident remains under investigation.


At 10:10 pm on October 8, 2016 Oelwein Police Cited Heike Gant, 58, of Oelwein.  Gant was cited and released for Disturbing the Peace and Quiet.  This Citation was issued following an incident in the 400 block of 13th av nw.


At 12:49 a.m., on October 9, 2016 Oelwein Police arrested Quinn Obrien, 20, of Cedar Rapids and Carlos Cano 19, of Cedar Rapids.  Obrien was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance-Serious Misdemeanor, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia-Simple Misdemeanor, Obrien was also cited with Possession of Alcohol under 21and Cano was charged with Operating While Intoxicated-Serious Misdemeanor, Possession of a Controlled Substance-Serious Misdemeanor and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia-Simple Misdemeanor.  These arrests were the result of a driving complaint that culminated in a traffic stop in the 10 block of 1st AV SE.

October 7,2016

On October 7, 2016 at 3:10 p.m., Oelwein Officers performed a traffic stop in the 300 block of 7th St SW.  The driver was found to have an invalid driving status.  Officers arrested Mandy Jo Martin, age 32 of Oelwein for Driving While License Revoked, a Serious Misdemeanor.



Oelwein Officers performed a traffic stop in the 10 block of 1st Av SW on October 7, 2016 at 10:15 p.m.  Officers arrested Timothy Joseph Hogan, age 20 of Oelwein on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Serious Misdemeanor and Possession of Paraphernalia, a Simple Misdemeanor.



On October 8, 2016 at 2:20 p.m., Oelwein Officers took a report of an assault that had occurred in the 100 block of South Frederick in Oelwein.  Officers arrested Jade Lynn Ann Nuehring, age 33 of Oelwein, on a charge of Assault, Simple Misdemeanor.

On October 6, 2016 at 2:40 p.m., Oelwein Officers arrested Chrystal Ann Grams, age 31 of Oelwein for a Fayette County Warrant charge of Failure to Appear for Debtor's Exam.

Fatality Accident Investigation Completed – Charges Filed:




The Oelwein Police Department has completed an investigation into a motor vehicle accident that occurred on June 5, 2016. Michael Christian Burkey, 24, of Hawkeye; driving a 2005 Audi, was northbound in the 800-900 block of North Frederick when he collided with a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Ann Sanderson, 82, of Oelwein.  As a result of the collision, Mrs. Sanderson later died from the injuries that she sustained.


The investigation determined that Mr. Burkey was operating his vehicle at an excessive rate of speed.  Mr. Burkey has been charged with Homicide by Vehicle – Reckless Driving, which is a Class C Felony.  Mr. Burkey is being held in the Fayette County Jail on bond.


The Oelwein Police Department were assisted with the investigation by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department and the Iowa State Patrol.  Also assisting at the initial scene was the Oelwein Fire Department and Oelwein Mercy Ambulance.


October 6, 2016

At 10:55 p.m., on October 5, 2016 Oelwein Police arrested Kelly Adam Lohrer, 33, of Oelwein.  Lohrer was arrested on 2 Fayette county warrants on original charges of Controlled Substance violations.  Lohrer was also charged with Unlawful Possession of Prescription Drugs- Serious Misdemeanor, Possession of a Controlled Substance- Serious Misdemeanor, Driving while License Suspended-Simple Misdemeanor and 2 counts of  Possession of Drug Paraphernalia-Simple Misdemeanor.  This arrest took place following an officer’s interaction with the subject in the 1300 block of West Charles.  Further charges are pending in this incident

October 5, 2016

At 2:01 am on November 5, 2016 at Oelwein Police arrested Shawna Nicole Wille, 29, of West Union.  Wille was arrested on charges of Domestic Abuse Assault- Simple Misdemeanor and Interference with Official Acts-Serious Misdemeanor.  This arrest followed the report of a disturbance in the 100 block East Charles.

October 1, 2016

On March 28th, 2016, Randy Allen Eschen (age 35), a convicted sex offender of Oelwein, was charged with two counts of Sexual Abuse 3rd Degree, both Class C Felonies. On June 6th, 2016, Eschen was granted pretrial release with the use of a GPS monitoring device. On July 11th, 2016, Authorities were notified that the GPS monitoring device was deactivated, and the device was found at a residence where Eschen was staying. An arrest warrant was issued for Eschen for violating pretrial release.

Through investigation, it was learned that Eschen had fled the area and possibly the state, eluding felony prosecution. On July 27th, 2016, the Oelwein Police Department requested assistance from the United States Marshals Service, in locating Mr. Eschen.

As a result of the joint investigation efforts between the Oelwein Police Department and the United States Marshals Service, Randy Eschen was apprehended in Cocoa, Brevard County, Florida on September 22, 2016 at 5:09 pm EST. This investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending.

The Oelwein Police Department was assisted in this investigation by the United States Marshals Service, Northern District of Iowa, and the United States Marshals Service Middle District of Florida. 

October 1, 2016

On October 1, 2016 at 01:40 a.m., Oelwein Police arrested Zachary Wade Stevens, 20, of Oelwein.  Stevens was arrested on a charge of Owi-Ist Offence-Serious Misdemeanor.  Stevens was also cited for Careless Driving and Excessive Speed.  This arrest followed a traffic stop in the 10 block of 13th av SW.

Oelwein Police "Branch" Out to Help Parks



Oelwein Police officers spent their Wednesday morning giving back to the community.  Officers volunteered their time to plant ten (10) new trees at the Veterans Sports Complex.  The trees were planted between the two city ball diamonds and are intended to provide instant beautification and a substance free environment as well as future shade for spectators and a natural barrier for foul balls from one diamond to the next. Chief Logan stated, “Our officers work each day to make this community safe and a better place to live. I am proud that they are willing to give their free time as well to help improve this area of the community for years to come.” The officers were assisted by the Oelwein Parks Department.



September 28,2016

On September 27, 2016 at 3:15 p.m., Oelwein Officers arrested Aaron Lee Lewis, age 22 of Oelwein for Eluding, a Serious Misdemeanor.  This subject was arrested and charged after officers attempted a traffic stop in the 200 block of 8th Av SE and Lewis refused to pull over for officers.  Lewis was also cited for Reckless Driving, 2 counts of Failure to Yield to a Traffic Control Device, and Violation of an Instructional Permit.


On September 27, 2016 at 7:50 p.m. Oelwein Officers, with the assistance of a Fayette County Sheriff's deputy, responded to a 2 vehicle property damage accident at the intersection of Hwy 150 South and 12th St SE in Oelwein.  Officers arrested Robert George Walsh, age 49 of Hazleton on charges of OWI 2nd Offense, an Aggravated Misdemeanor and Driving While License Suspended, a Simple Misdemeanor.  Walsh was also cited for Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Following too Close, and Failure to Have Insurance.

September 27,2016

On September 27, 2016 at 3:00 a.m., in the 500 block of West Charles, Oelwein Officers arrested Jessi Rae Smith, age 18 of Oelwein, on a Manchester Police Department warrant with original charges of four counts of Burglary in the third degree.
