The Oelwein Police Department serves the law enforcement requirement of the City of Oelwein in accordance with Chapter 80 of the Code of Iowa. The Oelwein Police Department also hosts the Oelwein Public Safety Communications Center, an enhanced 911 PSAP (Public Safety Access Point) and radio communications center which has the capability to page, communicate and route public safety resources (fire, police and ambulance services) to Fayette County, Iowa.

The Oelwein Police Department employs ten full and one part-time police officers, 4 full and one part-time communications operators, an administrative assistant and the Chief of Police as appointed by the Mayor and the Oelwein City Council.
