POLICE 1ST LIEUTENANT

 

The City of Oelwein Police Department is seeking an individual to serve as Police 1st Lieutenant. This is a key supervisory and leadership position in the Police Department. Under the supervision of the Chief of Police and Police Captain, this individual will assist with the management and administration of the Department; participate in overall departmental planning, research, and work coordination and perform related work as required.

 

Duties include, but are not limited to: planning, monitoring, and organizing police resources; provides project management as needed; advises the Chief of Police on budgeting and expenditures; supervises subordinate personnel; serves as a principal point of contact for the Department; coordinates and communicates with internal and external team members.

 

About the Department:

The Oelwein Police Department, a Civil Service agency, is a very busy law enforcement agency, which includes a 911 dispatch center. The officers of this department are dedicated and involved in the community and are proudly housed in a new facility that was constructed in 2014. The Chief's command staff consists of one Captain, one 1st Lieutenant (vacant), one 2nd Lieutenant, and one civilian Dispatch Supervisor. The Department has a staff of 22, of which 10 are full-time sworn personnel and 5 are part-time or reserve officers.

About the City:

Located in Fayette County, Oelwein is a busy and progressive city, that provides many recreational, entertainment, and cultural opportunities. Most recently, East Penn Manufacturing began construction on a new facility that will add 350 jobs and Transco Railcar has expanded their business and is adding an additional 100 jobs.

 

Oelwein is located 35 miles northeast of Waterloo and 55 miles north of Cedar Rapids.  This allows for small town living with access to the life in a bigger city.

 

Education & Experience:

A minimum of an Associates' degree required in Criminal Justice, Police Science, Public Administration, or related field is required. Considerable experience in police work, with at least six years of progressively responsible experience in law enforcement, including at least 2 years in a supervisory capacity for a law enforcement or military agency, required. Compensation:

Salary range is $56,000 -- $58,000/annual DOQ, with a fringe benefits package. Civil Service/Municipal Police & Fire Pension system.

Public Safety Communicator/Jailor Desired Minimum Qualifications

-Graduation from a high school or GED equivalent with specialized course work in general office practices such as typing, filing, accounting or bookkeeping.

-Two years of increasingly responsible related experience, or any equivalent combination of related education and experience.

-Working knowledge of computers and electronic data processing; working knowledge of modern office practices and procedures; some knowledge of accounting principles and practices.

-Some skill in operation of the listed tools and equipment: communications switchboard, including computer-aided systems; personal computer including word processing software; copy machine; fax machine; radio.

-Ability to perform cashier duties accurately; ability to effectively meet and deal with the public; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to handle stressful situations.

-Ability to operate radio and teletype communications.

-Ability to operate routine and E911 phones.

-Ability to pass any school or training to qualify the individual to operate the jail.

 

 

 

Patrolman Qualifications

-High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by a two year community college degree or vocational school training in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice administration, public administration, or a related field, or

-Three years’ experience as a full time certified police officer, or

-An equivalent combination of education and experience.

-Must be 21 years or older at the time of employment.

-Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid State of Iowa Driver’s License without record of suspension or revocation in any state.

-Felony convictions and disqualifying criminal histories within the past seven years are not allowed.

-U.S. citizen.

-Must be able to read and write the English language.

-Must be of good moral character and of temperate and industrious habits.

-Ability to meet Department's and State of Iowa's physical fitness standards (click here for Iowa Law Enforcement Academy information).
